Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering

The Civil & Environmental Engineering (CEE) Department at UMass Lowell (UML) is committed to student-friendly, quality teaching. CEE classes are taught by full time faculty and class sizes are small. UML's CEE graduates are highly valued by area employers and by graduate schools.

UML is the only public, ABET-accredited engineering program in the Boston Metropolitan area. It is located only 25 miles northwest from downtown Boston with direct commuter rail access between North Station and Lowell.

Civil engineers plan, design, construct, operate, and maintain facilities and systems that serve the basic needs of society. These include buildings, bridges, tunnels, roadways, railways, airports, harbors, dams, pipelines, water and wastewater systems. Civil engineers focus their problem-solving capabilities on making our communities better places to live. Civil engineers are frequently involved in city planning and in managing the use of natural resources. They face the challenges of meeting society's needs while protecting the environment.  Civil engineering is an umbrella field comprised of a number of related specialties.

Civil Engineering Specialties at UML:

Environmental Engineering - clean water, waste water, environmental impact, pollution identification, landfills, hazardous & non-hazardous waste management, site cleanup & remediation
